Why??? Simple. China virtually owns a huge chunk of US Debt. By doing so they have effectively intertwined US and Chinese economies. This is no COLD WAR we are probably looking at a future where there are two countries (US and China) vying for supremacy in all the regions and especially in Asia but actually should never hurt the other in a way which will affect their own economy. China needs the US consumers to buy their products and US needs China to buy their debt.Whether they like it or not they both ineffect are like bonded brothers and will probably co-operate more than any third party would think. India will be making a huge mistake to side with either of the parties as nothing is certain of the future.
